The Guitar
It’s done!
Some parts were easier than we expected, like cutting the initial body shape and adding contouring using rasps. Other parts presented challenges we were too new to guitar making to expect, like how critical bridge placement is. That resulted in us having to move the bridge closer to the neck, which turned out to not be a small thing. And speaking of the neck - we bought a pre-made neck rather than try to make one. Necks are complicated, so we elected to get a guitar body or two under our belts before we tackle necks.
All this resulted in us deciding to make bigger walnut plates to surround the leads, and then we had an idea - why not just make one big walnut piece to cover both leads? That turned into wondering why we shouldn’t just extend the walnut piece toward the knobs, with semi-circular cutouts, and then we added a subtle curve to the walnut on the opposite side from the knobs. Not only was this 11th hour design process fun, but it resulted in a unique look you won’t find anywhere else.
So the most important question is - how does it sound? My technical evaluation of the instrument’s sound is “pretty stinkin’ good.” Listen for yourself below (the video got a little blurred, but it’s more about the sound anyway).
